Flintham museum

Fred White's shop in Flintham getting new windows fitted in 1917.

The village shop at Flintham, Nottinghamshire, closed in 1982, bringing to an end about 150 years of retailing on the same site. The last shopkeeper, Muriel White, continued to live on the premises, but lived out of sight behind the closed shop.

In 1990 friends of Muriel entered the former village shop in Flintham and discovered it was 'frozen in time' with packets and tins of food on the shelves, all the shop fittings such as scales and the till, while in the back office was all the paperwork going back decades.

A dedicated group were able to sort through and then get a grant to open it as a museum in 1999. The museum still exists but is only open by prior arrangement. Its byline is a 'museum which looks at rural life through the eyes of a village shopkeeper.'
