Stained glass in the Vale

Late twentieth century window at Long Clawson.

I've spent almost all my life 'church crawling' as my parents stopped off at parish churches when we went on holiday. And I've long been intrigued by medieval and nineteenth century stained glass. Well, at least some of the Victorian glass – I'm not a fan of the decidedly garish.

But there seemed to be no way to find out the history and makers of the best of these windows.

However it seems the late Paul Sharpling was aware of the problem and compiled a massive survey of the glass in Leicestershire and Rutland. He described in great detail the stained glass at Bottesford, Branston-by-Belvoir, Eastwell, Eaton, Harby, Harston, Holwell, Hose, Knipton, Long Clawson, Muston, Redmile and, seemingly, every other church in Leicestershire and Rutland. See stainedglassmuseum.com/uploads/paul%20sharpling%20leics%20and%20rutland%20gazeteer%20in%20two%20columns.pdf
