Rutland's sepulchral effigies

Seventeen churches in Rutland have one or more sepulchral effigies. The links below are to a web site researched and written by Max Wade Matthews.

The effigies in Exton church are some of the best in the country, let alone the county.

Both Ashwell and Tickencote have effigies of a knight carved from wood rather than stone, both rare survival from the fourteenth century.

The memorial by Grinling Gibbons to Baptist and Elizabeth Noel (died 1680s), also in Exton church. No less than twenty-five different people are portrayed, probably the most complex effigy in the country.
