Telephone exchanges in Rutland

In 2024 I received an email asking if I knew where the 1930s 'RAX' telephone exchange in Wymeswold had been. Fair dinkum – it's my contact details on the relevant local history group's website. Sadly I didn't know and didn't know of anyone else that might. But it's reasonable to think it was where the current exchange is located.

RAX: Rural Automatic Exchange. The initial name for smaller, standardized exchanges designed for rural areas.

ATE: Automatic Telephone Exchange. The later generation of telephone exchanges.

To see photos and details of the ten BT telephone exchanges and four former exchanges in Rutland (01572 and 01780 STD codes) visit
telephone-exchanges.org.uk/exchanges/oakham-exchanges/ and
telephone-exchanges.org.uk/exchanges/stamford-exchanges/

These exchanges are at Ashwell, Belton, Cottesmore (2), Empingham (2), Manton, Morcott, North Luffenham (2), Oakham, Thistleton, Uppingham and Wymondham.

Note that Belmesthorpe, Essendine, Great Casterton, Little Casterton, Ryhall, Tickencote and Tinwell are among the villages linked to the Stamford exchange.

This page allows you to enter your STD dialing code and see photographs of telephone exchanges in that area:

Thanks to John Cranston for introducing me to a new topic of nerdiness!
