A detailed history of activities at Wymeswold airfield in the 1950s and 1960s has been prepared by Richard Knight, who grew up at the western end of the runways.

Most of the information is about the activities of the RAF and Fields Aircraft Services, although there is also lots of previously-unseen photographs taken in the winter of 1944 and during the build up to D-Day, and photographs taken during public open days.

In total there is almost 70,000 words and about 440 photographs. This is available as a free PDF: www.hoap.co.uk/who/raf_wymeswold.pdf    Note the file size is 38 Mbytes so may take a while to download on slow connections.

There are also four videos about RAF Wymeswold by Richard Knight:

Bomber crash in Wymeswold

Based on notes sent by Lesley Daft, in 2002 Alex Moretti prepared an account of Wellington X3465 that crashed on 14th January 1945 which caused the death of Flying Officer Eric Ralph Peace AUS8309.

Lesley Daft's notes have been digitised and can be downloaded as a ZIP file.

The Eagle mural

Ever wondered why there is an eagle made from stone on the wall of the pharmacy on Hoton Road?

It was created in 1983 to commemorate the deaths of nearly all the crew of Wellington 1C DV771 which crashed on 25th November 1943 after barely missing the village. Six of the seven crew died.

Ralph Emmerson is related to one of the deceased and has written up a detailed account for the WHO. He has also organised funding for a plaque which gives the names of the airmen.

A memorial plaque was unveiled next to the eagle during a Service of Dedication on Thursday 20th March 2025.
