Prestwold's gravestonesJoan ShawIntroduction and photographs by Bob Trubshaw Early in 2026 I started a project to draw more attention to the eighteenth century stonemasons and engravers who produced the wonderful 'Swithland' slate gravestones in the churchyards of the Wolds villages (and over a much bigger area). No less than four of the most regionally and nationally important masons had workshops in Wymeswold. This article by Ginny Westcott gives some background to their lives. As a first step towards looking at other churchyards in the Wolds Joan Shaw has kindly typed up handwritten notes which were probably made by Alec and Jessie Moretti in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I have added photographs of some of the memorials. Almost all the gravestones at Prestwold are from slate. Those from before about 1840 use Swithland slate. Later ones use Welsh slate. Some, but not all, the memorials are 'signed' at the bottom with the maker's name. Because of vegetation growth some of these names are less visible now than when the survey was made.
The 'format' of this list is the name of the mason (in alphabetical order) followed by the date of death of the person(s) commemorated (so a good indication of when the memorial was created) followed by the surname of the deceased.
