Wood

Died 1623: Erected in 1631

Above the south door is an unusual oil-painted wooden bust of Margery Wright set into a circular arch topped with three urn-like finials. Wright is represented in a high crowned hat, cap, frill, black mantle, red muff and blue dress.

The inscription reads:

The monument of Mrs Margery Wright, late wife of Gilbt Wright of London, who being born in this Towne did (out of her charitable and pious disposition) gave in her lifetime £43 to provide Gowns yearly for ever, for certain aged and poore people. She died August 11, 1623.

Margery, the daughter of William Shaw, was baptised in 1579 and married Gilbert Wright of London in 1603. Originally the charity, which provided gowns for six poor folk, was funded by forty-two acres of land that raised £4 a year, but by 1877, controlled by 12 trustees, it was yielding an annual income of £82.
