Recumbent Priest

Freestone

14th century

This effigy of an unknown priest lies under an ogee arch in a recess in the north aisle.

For many years it lay in the churchyard and as such is very much weathered. It has a flat featureless face and a liturgical towel hanging over the left arm. At the feet lies a lion.

It seems to be contemporary with, and made out of the same type of stone, as the ‘Fair Maid of Normanton’ in St Mary's, Bottesford.
