Recumbent priest

Freestone

14th century

In an arched canopy in the chancel north wall lies the effigy of a priest depicted in Eucharistic vestments. On his breast are the chalice and paten. Dressed in an alb, stole, chasuble and maniple the effigy is locally called, for reasons not clear, the 'Danish Priest'.

A point to note is the inverted decoration on the side of the slab. Such decoration is rare for a monument of this date and possibily the slab is from a now-lost tomb and has been reused for the present effigy.
