John and Alice Harrington

Recumbent knight and lady

Alabaster

1524

John Harrington is depicted in armour with a lion at his feet and a seated beadsmen, holding a rosary, on the sole of his right foot.

His long hair cut straight and his head is resting on a helm which is surmounted by a crest of a lion with a chain round its neck. His gauntlets and dagger lie by his right leg.

Alice is depicted wearing a long headdress and a cross suspended from a necklace. Her head rests on a double cushion supported by angels while at her feet two dogs nibble at the hem of the skirt.

The south and north sides of the tomb-chest have three closely cusped lozenges containing three shields bearing

  1. A fret argent (Harrington)
  2. A bend wavey (?)
  3. A fret argent, in dexter canton a star (?).

The west end is blank while the east end contains one shield.

The four corners have spiral balusters while around the base of the chest are the two letters A (Alice) and I (John) repeated.

The monument was built during Alice's lifetime and there are blanks in the inscription where her date of death should be, nobody bothering to carve it in when she died.

The inscription, round the tomb-chest's chamfer reads:

Orate pro animabus Johannis Harington et Alice uxoris ejus, qui quidem Johannes obiit v. die mensiis Novemb. Anno Dom. M.CCCCC.XXIIII. Et predicta Alica obiit [  ] die meniis [  ] M.CCCCC [  ] quirum animabus propitietuc Deus. Amen

Pray for the souls of John Harington and that of Alice his wife. John died the 5th day of November in the year of our Lord 1524. The aforesaid Alice died on the [  ] day of the month of [  ] 15 [  ] on whose souls may God have mercy. Amen
