James Noel

Standing Classical

Marble by William Stanton

1681

Topped by an achievement of arms, this monument, in the north transept, depicts James standing on a tall base in front of a shallow black niche. He is wearing a large wig, long classical cloak and calf-length boots. His two younger brothers are sitting on a pillar that carries the inscription:

Jacobus Noel, Baptistae Vicecomitis de Campden e quarta Uxore Elizabeta, Montacuti Comitis de Linsey magni Camerarii Anglie, filia, Filius quintus et ingentis spei juvenis, forma praecellens aeque ac Statura eminens: insigni supra annos tam anima quam Corporis cultu, et vigore praeditus, obiit Junii 24 1681. Aetatis suae 18.

Quem Puerum forsan facies dixissit et aetas, Fecerat hunc virtus, atque Statura Virum. Maturus vixit, licet immaturus obivet; Ingenii vis hoc, mors dedit illud, Opus.

Great as his birth did all his actions shew, His very Reactions spoke him so. Spritely his Meern, yet Grave, discreet and wise, Free from the Ages grand Debaucheries. Virtue with Stature still his years outran; He died in's Nonage and yet lived a Man.

Eodem fato conjunctus Linseius ejus dem Baptistae et Elizabetae Filius primulus, qui obiit anniculus Martii 12. An. Domini, 1656.

Item eorundem parentum Filius quartus, cui ob praeproperum nimis fatum desuit Praenomen, 1662.

The first Latin text translates as:

James Noel, fifth son of Baptist viscount of Campden by his fourth wife Elizabeth, daughter of Montacute Earl of Linsey, Great Chamberlain of England. He was a youth of great promise, equally outstanding in beauty as eminent in stature with a remarkable culture beyond his years of both mind and body and gifted with liveliness. He died on 24th June 1681 aged 18. Whom perhaps features and age had pronounced a boy, virtue and statue had made a made. He lived as a mature man although he died immature. Force of intellect gave him this achievement, death gave him that.

The second Latin text translates as:

Visited by the same fate Linsey first son of the same Baptist and Elizabeth who died one year old on 12 March in the year of our Lord 1656. Also the fourth son of the same parents for whom a forename is lacking on account of too hasty fate 1662.
