Elizabeth Ferrers

Recumbent lady

Alabaster

1501

Elizabeth's head, which is crowned by a coronet, is resting on a double cushion, the upper one of which is held by an angel. She is depicted wearing a shift with three buttons on the breast, long sleeves and a cross belt, over which she has a mantle. With long hair falling beneath her elbows, she is wearing a triple necklace. Some of her fingers are missing; while by her left side plays a, now headless, running dog. The whole creation has been repainted and the original design on the cloak is now almost wholly obliterated.

On the north and south sides of the tomb-chest, under double flowered niches, are six figures of bearded beadsmen in cowls. At the head two angels are holding a shield on which was:

Argent, a fess Gules, in chief three roundles gules (Devereux) impaling argent, three bear's heads erased sable musseled or (Langham).

At the foot of the chest three angels hold the arms Qly; 1st Ferrers. 2nd and 3rd Langham. 4th Devereux.

The inscription that was on the ledge of the tomb-chest was recorded by Burton and read:

Hic Jacent Corpus Domine Elizabethe Ferrers, nuper uxoris domini Johannis Ferrers de Chartley, que Elizabetha obiit 1501.

(Here lies the body of Lady Elizabeth Ferrers wife of Lord John Ferrers of Chartley, which Elizabeth died 1501.)
