?Burgeis

Recumbent female

Alabaster

Late 14th century

Lady Burgeis is depicted with her head, with long flowing hair raised in front, resting on a cushion supported by two very well preserved angels in long robes. The effigy is depicted wearing mitten sleeves, surcoat, necklace, a belt with nine studs and a mantle. At the feet are two dogs with collars round their necks.

On the tomb-chest are five shields. One is blank while the other four all carry the same arms:

Argent, on a bend, between two cross crosslets fitchy gules, three lozenges argent (Burgeis, alias Melton).

There is no inscription on this much-restored effigy.
