Originally on the chancel south wall this miniature figure of Anne Burton is now
on the west
wall of the north aisle. She is depicted kneeling on a corbel beneath which are two separate
inscriptions. The top one reads:
Anne the daughter of Andrew
Burton of Okeham esquire, Fellow
of Gray's Inn, departed this life
June XIX Anno Domini 1642
Aetat XV.
The lower one commands us:
Reader stand back! Dull not the marble shine
with irreligious breath; the stone's divine.
And does enclose a wonder, beauty wit
devotion and viginity with it.
Which like a lilly faynting in its prime
withered and left the world. Deceitful time
cropt it too soone; and earth the selfsame wombe
from whence it sprung is now become its tombe.
Whose sweeter soule a flower of matchless price;
transplanted it from hence to Paradise.
