Thomas Hopton, Thomas Tyrrel and ?

Recumbent knights and lady

Alabaster

c.1580

This clumsy-looking tomb by the south wall shows two men in armour with large flowing beards and greyhounds at their feet. Between them lies a lady who was wife to both men. Her two sons are also shown kneeling at one end of the tomb. The figure of the second husband is a later addition.

On the sides of the tomb, which only measures about 30 inches square, are two boys and three girls and the arms: Argent two chevrons gules with a border engrailed sable (Clare).

On the west end is Hopton impaling Clare.

The inscription reads:

These be ye pyctures of Thom Hopton, esquire, and his wife and aft wyfe unto Sir Thom Tyrrel knight.
