Recumbent priest

Freestone

14th century

This effigy, which was once at the east end of the now demolished north aisle, now lies over the Perkins Family mausoleum. Depicted under an ogee arch canopy, the monument is believed to be that of a Cistercian Abbot of Merevale. With its head resting on a cushion the effigy is represented wearing the robes of that Order, hands joined in prayer and feet resting on a dog guardant.

This may have originally been in Merevale Abbey and removed to this church on the abbey's dissolution. However, there is also the possibility that it was originally sited in the church for there is an empty tomb recess at the east end of the south aisle that may have contained this effigy.

Another point in favour of our Cistercian is that from 1198 to the dissolution the patron of the church was the Abbot of Merevale.
