Recumbent priest

Freestone

14th century

Set under an ogee arch in the chancel north wall the figure is depicted in a hooded clerical gown with his hands in prayer. The head is resting on two cushions, the upper one of which is diamond-shaped.

It seems as if the figure would look a lot better vertical, especially as there were originally shafts to the arch on either side of the figure – only a part of the left one now remaining.

At the west end, behind the head, is a shield carved onto the effigy with the Culpepper arms,

Argent, a bend engrailed gules, a label for difference.

The tomb-chest, which has five quatrefoils on the side and one at each end, does not seem to be the original chest for the effigy.
