1799

The pedestal of this white marble bust bears the inscription:

Robert Sherard Earl of Harborough ob April the 25th 1799 ætat 79

Robert was the eldest surviving brother of Bennet who died in 1770. He spent the first part of his adult life in holy orders before resigning in 1773, the year he became vice-president of the Leicester Infirmary.

He married three times. First to Catherine Hearst (who died in 1765), second to Jane Reeve (died in 1770) and thirdly to Dorothy Roberts (who died in 1781).

He rebuilt the family house in 1776 and at the same time built a larger house, costing over £1,000, for the men who enjoyed the benefits of the alms house which had built pursuant to the will of Bennett, the first earl, who had died in 1732. He also increased the annual annuity to £144.
