William Humphrey

Recumbent knight

Alabaster by Gabriel Royley

1592

This effigy, which stands at the west end of the south aisle, lies on a tomb-chest with shields separated by balusters. He is represented in armour with his sword on the left and gauntlets on the right. Bearded, William Humphrey's hair is in curled ringlets; his head rests on his helm. Round his neck he has a double chain from which hangs a cross. The, now broken, hands are joined in prayer while his feet rest on a lion.

The inscription reads:

Here lyeth the bodie of Wyllm Humffrey of Swepstone, esquire, which deceased the 3 of March, anno Domi 1591.
