Hugo Turville

Partial

Freestone

1340

In sunken relief, the head to the waist and the feet are the only parts of the body showing. The facial features are very flat and weathered. Holding a heart in his hands Hugo Turville is depicted wearing a high gorget, while the feet, between which the bottom of a staff appears, are resting on a, now unrecognisable, animal.

The inscription reads:

Hic jacet Hugo Turville, qui obiit in die s'ci dionisiin a'no MCCCXL

(Here lies Hugo Turville who died in 1340).
