Agnes Turville

Recumbent lady

Freestone

1349

This effigy is depicted wearing a cloak over the shoulders and a straight-necked dress, the belt of which can be seen through the slits in the mantle. Curly-haired, the head, the face of which is almost totally devoid of features, is resting on a cushion supported by angels. Holding a heart in her hands her feet are on a, now headless, animal.

The inscription reads:

Icy gust Agnes Turville qu morit le sept jour de juli l'an de nostre Seinor Jesu Christ mil tres cent quaraunte nef, de quele alme Dieu eit mercy

(Here lies Agnus Turville who died on the seventh day of July in the Year of Our Saviour Jesus Christ 1349, on whose soul may God have mercy).
