John Digby

Cross-legged knight

Freestone

1269

John Digby is depicted in complete coat of mail and sleeveless surcoat. On his left arm is a shield three feet in length charged with the device of a large fleur-de-lis. On the sinister chief there is a half moon and while the dexter chief is now obliterated it would have carried a sun. His right hand is in the act of drawing his sword, the scabbard of which is held by the left hand.

Wearing rowelled spurs his feet are on a lion whose forepaws rest on a man's head.

The Norman-French inscription, now lost, but recorded by the Elizabethan antiquary Wyrley, read:

Iehan de Digby gist ici. Praies pur lui.

(John Digby lies here. Prayer for him.)
