Arabella Digby

Recumbent lady

Freestone

1269

Dressed in a long gown with close fitting sleeves buttoned to the wrists, Lady Arabella, the daughter of Sir William Harcourt, is depicted wearing a veil, an indication that on her death she was a widow. At her feet is a, now almost legless, lap dog.

Wyrley recorded that on the upper garment there was a fleur-de-lis, this, however, is now obliterated. Her right hand holds a book while the left is holding a scroll. Originally this scroll, now broken off at the hand, would have been longer and have borne an inscription.

There are only three other effigies with scrolls known: Rochester Cathedral, Bedale and Scaresdale.
